Inside Darley June 2018

Hi, I’m Paul Darley, thanks for coming to watch the June issue of Inside Darley.

I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend, we had some warm weather here which was nice for a change. I also hope you took some time to remember those that gave their lives while on active military service.

Recently Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University published an article called “Four Reasons Why Hiring Veterans Makes Good Business Sense,” this is our first attachment. The article was based on insights from Dan Friend in which he talks about how military personnel may be an untapped resource for many companies. He dives into how the military has produces people that are highly trainable, know when to take the lead, are selfless to those around them, and know how to use constructive criticism to improve themselves. At Darley, we have been hiring more veterans over the past ten years than ever before. I have seen these employees take the initiative and push themselves and the company to an even higher level of success.

Speaking of success, I attended the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Conference in San Antonio, Texas back in early May which was an incredible experience. I have been attending this conference for thirteen years and I’m always blown away by the speakers and the discussions they spark. Garry Briese the Executive Director of the Colorado State Fire Chiefs and a member on W.S Darley’s board of Directors spoke about cancer in the fire service.

It is no secret that cancer is a major problem for firefighters a recent study found firefighters are 14% higher risk for cancer than the rest of the population. At FDIC earlier, this year we introduced the Darley Decontamination Unit, the Decontamination Unit effectively reduces Volatile Organic Compounds from firefighters’ helmets, masks, and turnout gear. If you have interest in the system contact Peter Darley.

The NFPA 3000 Standard for Active Shooter/Hostile event Response released last month. Active shooter has become one of if not the biggest concern for emergency responders in recent years, so I highly recommend taking the time to look through this information.

While at the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Conference I caught a discussion on fire sprinkler systems. It was a very timely discussion with May 20th being Home Fire Sprinkler Day. The NFPA has some great resources on home fire sprinklers they have a myths vs facts article and side by side comparisons of live burns. There are some great podcasts on this topic at FireSprinklerInitiative.org/Podcasts. I encourage you to check it out.

Podcasts are a great medium to get information to people whenever they have free time. At Darley, we have been producing our own podcasts we currently have 13 and our library grows each week, so there is always something new to listen to. Recently we had Bill Burke of FireDex on our Inside Darley Podcast, Bill talked about the origins of FireDex and its journey to becoming a leader in the turnout gear industry.

Finally, Fireboy-Xintex, a Darley company that is a leader in the fire-suppression and gas detection in the marine industry, recently put out their new brochure which is our second attachment. Larry Akins our CEO of Fireboy-Xintex recently attended the Marine Leadership Alliance Conference in La Jolla, California. ITR Economics, an economic forecasting company, gave a presentation about what the boating economy will look like in the next couple of years, which is our final attachment.

Thanks for watching this issue of Inside Darley, if there is anything we can be doing to assist you we hope you reach out to us.
