Hi, I’m Paul Darley, thanks for coming to watch the March issue of Inside Darley.
With the Winter Olympics wrapped up and Norway being the country with the most medals this year; I decided to look back on past Winter Olympics. I was surprised to find Norway is the medal leader of all time in the winter Olympics. That got me thinking what is it that makes Norway so good at the winter games despite having a lower population? While I might be way off I found that Norway also tops the list of the happiest population according to The World Happiness Report 2017 which is our first attachment. The report uses six factors when ranking countries which include: GDP per capita, healthy years of life expectancy, social support, trust in government, perceived freedom to make life decisions, and generosity.
Our second attachment is a study done by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called The International Forum to Advance First Responder Innovation. The study focused the first responder market and where opportunities for innovation exist and what barriers are holding back these innovations. Despite the fire services having more first responders with about 1.7 million but Law Enforcement receives a much higher budget. There are a lot of other useful insights in this study I encourage you to look through it.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation hosted The Fire Service Technology Summit back in July 2016. Our third attachment is the report from the event. Attendees broke into five groups to discuss the following topics: command and control; emergency operations; health, wellness and occupational diseases; tools and equipment; and training. Attendees worked together to identify technologies the fire services could implement in the next five years. Additional discussions addressed ways the fire service and research communities could better work together.
Here at Darley, we push innovation forward with our WeRespond community. The goal of the community is to accelerate innovation for first responders. Darley also partnered with Texas A&M for their Under Fire Response-Innovation showdown. The Under Fire event will have innovative technologies for the fire services competing for cash prizes. The event will be a great way to see these new technologies in action. Under Fire will start March 8th so don’t miss it.
Finally, with FDIC 2018 less than 2 months away I thought I would give you a bit of a teaser of what Darley will be showcasing. Darley will have FLAIM Systems demonstrating their Virtual Reality Fire training systems. We will reveal more of what’s to come as we get closer to FDIC 2018, so be on the lookout.
