Hi, I’m Paul Darley and thanks for tuning into this episode of Inside Darley. I hope this video finds you and your family in good health and spirits. We as a fire service the question everyone seems to be asking is what’s the future of municipal budgets and department budgets. Hopefully this issue will give you some answers to these questions or at least point you in the right direction.
Our first attachment comes from the International fire chiefs association, it’s their economic impact study. It reports on the impacts of budgets for fire departments, it is updated daily and can be organized by state and other ways.
FAMA is coming out with a fire industry impact survey, we’ve attached a copy of that for you. We encourage you to click this link and fill it out, $500 goes out to the lucky winner of that who we randomly pick. FAMA also just released their new fire apparatus orders for the 1st quarter of 2020. They were up 8% year over year that was great news we had a lot of tailwinds in the fire industry coming into this the first quarter really saw very little impact from the Covid crisis. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters of this are likely going to be impacted as well as the future quarters going into 2021. Historicaly the 2nd quarter is the slowest quarter for new orders for fire apparatus and the 4th quarter is generally the best quarter for new fire apparatus. So I think we will see a change in that this year as budgets are impacted.
If you want to get a little more information on that too I’d encourage you to join our webinar for our Illinois Service Home Day. Which is going to be held this Thursday June 4th at 11 am CST. We’ve attached information for you and encourage you to sign up. We’ve got Chief Gary Ludwig who is the president and chairman of the International Association of Fire Chiefs is on that as well as an incredible panel. We have congressman Mike Bost who is the co-chair of the congressional fire service institute is our key note speaker so check that out. I’m actually not going to be moderating it to accommodate fire chiefs who you really want to hear from them. I’m going to step down from a moderator position for the first time in fifteen years so hopefully you will sign up.
There is a lot of attachments here for reading. Patrick Lencioni is one of the great writers and business leaders these days who I look to. We’ve attached an article by him from CEO magazine titled Toward a New and Better Normal, it’s got some great stuff in there. Also I just listened to a great podcast, the Learning Leader by Ryan Hawk. If you haven’t listened to this please check it out, I suggest episode 359 with Patrick Lencioni. It’s just Patrick talking about leadership during the Covid-19 crisis, he talks about being exceedingly human, be persistent, and have a rallying cry. Part of our rallying cry at Darley is “We’ve got this” while you are there please check out episode 363 with our great friend Admiral William McRaven. He talks about the Bin Laden capture and other things.
Lastly I’ll tell you we have got about 10 more articles on here like The toughest leadership test from McKinsy & Company, a national geographic article Is It Safe to Travel, a Wall Street Journal article from last week Why Does Zoom Exhaust You?
It’s great to see the states like Illinois and Wisconsin and other places where we participate and around the world really starting to reopen and we’ve attached a lot of articles here for reopening. Then hopefully you can help you as your business starts to reopen.
So thanks for tuning into this episode of Inside Darley if there is anything we can be doing to support you please do reach out to us.
