Inside Darley January 2019

Hi, I’m Paul Darley, thanks for coming to watch the January issue of Inside Darley.

I hope you had a great 2018. I like to make the first Inside Darley of the year a bit of a toolkit to help you plan out the new year.

We enter 2019 as the year of the pig in the Chinese New Year. The pig is a sign for good fortune and good luck. The first attachment is from McKinsey & Company called “What can we expect in China in 2019.” The article goes into the impact of the US-China trade war, the direction of investments in the US from China, and the issue of IP transfer. China will be an important factor in 2019, and this article is a great summary of what to expect going forward this year.

The second attachment is also from McKinsey & Company the article is titled “Economic Conditions Snapshot, December 2018: McKinsey Global Survey results.” The article summarized a survey asking CEOs’ about economic conditions and their opinion of where the economy is headed. The answers from the surveyed CEOs showed signs of reduced confidence in the economy going into December 2018. One of the best ways to gauge the coming economy is the confidence level of CEOs, and this article does a great job of summarizing them.

When building a company’s 5-year plan, it’s advisable to consider future trends. Which leads to our final attachment is called “World’s Top Global Mega Trends To 2025 and Implications to Business, Society and Cultures” from Frost & Sullivan. The article goes through the twelve biggest global trends and what we could expect to see as soon as 2025. Keep this one around and check in on it every so often, it’s always interesting to see how many of these they get right.

Podcasts have exploded as a form of consumer media. At W.S. Darley, when we saw this trend emerge we started the Smart Fire Fighting Podcast. Our host, Kevin Sofen, brings guests on his show to learn more about cutting-edge technology that is banging on the door of the fire industry. If you love to learn about new technology and how it’s changing the fire industry, this is the podcast for you.

Another podcast you should check out is Ditch-Digger CEO. The hosts, Gary Rabine, and Quinton James talk to CEOs around the world about their experiences. I was on one of their recent episodes, we talked about staying hungry and the challenges of running a family business. Gary and Quinton are character guys that bring out the best in their guests.

Thanks for tuning in to this issue of Inside Darley, if there is anything we can be doing to assist you we hope you reach out to us. Happy New Year.
