Hi, I’m Paul Darley, thanks for coming to watch the September issue of Inside Darley.

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. I had a chance to spend time with my family and made sure to be mindful with my family. Being mindful is an important part of emotional intelligence. I’m a big advocate of improving one’s emotional intelligence, and being attentive of the people around you is an important factor of that.

I’m a big fan of Ted Talks. One of my favorite ted talks was “Why are we not more compassionate?” by Daniel Goleman. Daniel is an author and science journalist who authored the book Emotional Intelligence. In his Ted Talk, he discusses being present when you’re with others, especially with how distracted people are with their phones. He coined a term for his frustration with people who are on their phone instead of interacting with the people they are with, Pisseled, which is a combination of puzzled and pissed off. The first half of his talk is excellent, and I highly suggest you check it out.

Recently we have seen the fire service being more emotionally intelligent. Our first attachment is an article from FireRescueMagazine.com by Bob Butler called “Our Quest for Service Excellence.” In the article, he highlights ways firehouses can better serve their communities. The late Alan V. Brunacini former fire chief of Phoenix, and Jeff Johnson the former fire chief of Tualatin Valley, spearheaded this community-focused initiative. We are seeing fire departments across the country become community-focused.

The fire service is being asked to step up more than ever before. The increase in the number of active shooter cases throughout the U.S has caused NFPA to come out and address the training for these situations. Our second attachment is from FireRescue1, and it’s an ebook about active shooter training. While we hope no department will have to face this challenge, we hope they will be prepared. Firefighters should know that eDarley.com offers active-shooter equipment designed to keep you safe during these scenarios.

The boat market is starting to soften because of the economy, and we are seeing it at Fireboy-Xintex. We have done a great job reinventing ourselves and designing fire suppression products for computer rooms, the DOD, and other applications. We are always trying to diversify ourselves and not rely on any one market.

Thanks for tuning in to this issue of Inside Darley, if there is anything, we can be doing to assist you we hope you reach out to us.
