The Tempest Mobile Ventilation Unit is a large-diameter positive pressure ventilation fan used for emergency ventilation of large structures such as box stores, high-rise buildings, tunnels and warehouses. The MVU gives fire fighters and emergency personnel greater control over the environment inside a structure by allowing them to control the movement of smoke, heat and other harmful gases.
The application of PPV with the Tempest Mobile Ventilation Unit results in reduced temperatures, greater visibility and a reduced chance of flashover during fire fighting incidents. In addition, the MVU can be used to keep high-rise evacuation stairwells clear of smoke while providing a clear path for fire fighters to access a fire on upper floors. During emergency incidents in shopping malls, the MVU can be used to direct smoke, heat and gases away from unaffected areas to reduce merchandise damage.
The Tempest Mobile Ventilation Unit is available in three sizes: The MVU-48 features a 48" diameter blade, 130hp engine, and generates 130,000 CFM. The MVU-60 features a 60" diameter blade, 130hp engine, and generates 150,000 CFM. The lightweight MVU-125 shown here features a 48" diameter blade, 100hp engine, and generates 125,000 CFM. All models can be ordered with a scissors lift, 360 degree rotation, 30 degree tilt and ventilator misting system. The MVU fan and adjustment functions are controlled via a wire remote control or control panel.
The MVU can be mounted in a variety of vehicle platforms. The MVU-125 weighs 800 pounds and can be mounted onto a medium duty truck chassis such as the Ford F-550. The MVU-48 weighs 8,000 pounds and can be mounted onto a heavy duty chassis such as the Ford F-650. All MVU models can be mounted on a trailer or moveable skid.
The MVU is set up in the same way as a traditional PPV blower. It is positioned outside of the structure and the MVU air pattern is directed at an opening that will be used by personnel to enter the structure. This "cone-shaped" air pattern generated by the MVU completely covers the entrance opening and seals it with air. At the same time, an exhaust opening is created where the contaminants in the structure will be ventilated. Once the MVU is started, the air pressure generated at the entrance opening forces the contaminants out the exhaust opening, resulting in an exchange of the hostile interior environment with clean, fresh air.
The Tempest Mobile Ventilation Unit represents the leading edge of PPV blower technology. It allows PPV to be applied in ways that are impossible with traditional PPV blowers and expands the potential benefits of PPV for fire and emergency personnel.
